Angela Massey is the President of the South Carolina Flute Society and currently serves as a freelance flutist in the Augusta, GA area where she has performed with the Augusta Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, the Savannah Philharmonic, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, and the Augusta Choral Society. Outside of Augusta, Angela has performed extensively throughout the US and Europe in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, England, France, and Italy. In the past she has held principal positions in the orchestra at the Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy and in various ensembles at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Some of Angela’s notable accomplishments include winning the Raleigh Area Flute Association Competition, placing third in the Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition, and being a finalist for the Myrna Brown Competition. She has also appeared as soloist with the Carolina Youth Symphony on the Kent Kennan Night Soliloquy.
As an avid performer of new music, Angela has worked with many notable composers on their pieces such as Michael Torke, Moritz Eggert, Eric Whitacre, Dustin Callahan, and Karel Husa. She performed the premier of Dustin Callahan’s Meditation for small chamber ensemble. In regards to chamber music, Angela was a founding member of woodwind quintets in Chapel Hill, NC and Cincinnati, OH as well as a performer with various chamber ensembles in Morges, Switzerland through Le Cours International de Musique. She has also had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses and seminars with James Galway, Eleanor Lawrence, Gary Shocker, Tadeu Coelho, Jill Felber, Peter Bacchus, Randy Bowman, Patricia Harper, and Robert Langevin.
As a teacher, Angela has given many masterclasses and seminars on flute performance techniques, preparation, and injury prevention. She has also maintained successful teaching studios in South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, and Georgia with many students to be accepted into reputable music schools, receive awards, and to place into the honor bands for their state. In addition to her private flute studio she also serves as the flute and music theory instructor at the Augusta Preparatoy Day School Conservatory Program. Her music theory background includes rigorous instruction from some of the most highly recognized theorists in the field such as Dr. Miguel Roig-Francolí, Dr. Steven Cahn, Dr. Allen Anderson, and Dr. Severine Neff.
A native of South Carolina, Angela began her studies at the age of nine. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Music degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her Master of Music degree in flute performance from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Her principal instructors have been Dr. Brad Garner, Jack Wellbaum, Dr. Brooks de Wetter-Smith, and Martha Kitterman.
